From Resistance to Engagement: Rethinking IG Policies
Sunday, October 19
9:00am - 5:00pm
Instructor: Lewis Eisen
We’ve learned that the stick doesn’t work.
You can push the “compliance” argument all year and see minimal results — because compliance doesn’t motivate most people. If barking orders like a supreme commander actually worked, we’d all be doing victory laps by now.
If you’re ready to be innovative and break from tradition, you can adopt a more modern approach — one that also makes your job a whole lot easier. IG is unlike other corporate functions. It’s often misunderstood across the organization and depends heavily on buy-in from people outside the IG team. For its programs to succeed, your policies need to overcome resistance — not trigger it. That means building a framework that reflects the realities of organizational pushback, and using language that invites cooperation instead of defensiveness.
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore how IG policies, standards, and procedures can either amplify silos and engender resistance — or serve as tools for building trust and collaboration. Through practical exercises and group discussion, we’ll work through a number of techniques for drafting statements that increase clarity and encourage buy-in.
Over the course of the day, we will cover how to:
- Build a flexible policy framework that keeps pace with change
- Eliminate duplication by restructuring key elements
- Strike the right tone — strict but not bossy
- Significantly reduce the time required for approvals.
Whether you’re new to policy writing or have the battle scars to prove you’re not, this workshop will sharpen your skills and expand your toolkit. You’ll learn how to craft policies that not only tick the legal and regulatory boxes, but also help create a culture where people actually want to follow the rules — no cattle prod required.
You will walk away with:
- an understanding of the cultural dynamics that shape the success of IG policies
- a defensible methodology for scoping content: what to include and what to omit
- strategies for breaking down silos and integrating IG requirements into other organizational policies
- techniques for achieving the right tone — sounding strict without sounding bossy
- practical ways to link IG policies to enforcement mechanisms like employee discipline and internal audit
May be eligible for up to 6.5 CEUs
